Heather Small Tickets

An actress, TV reality star and songwriter, Heather Small is a soul and pop singer who is mostly associated with M People, the breakthrough band that launched her career. Since 2000, Small has operated as a solo artist with a backing band at her live shows. Born in 1965, Small has been performing since she was a teenager.

Heather Small's early career

In 1987, Small joined her first group, Hot House. Early in her recording career, Small provided the newly recorded English language vocals for an Italian house music band called Black Box. The result was a new version of the smash hit single “Ride on Time”, which led to Small coming to the attention of Mike Pickering, a DJ from Accrington in Lancashire. Pickering persuaded the singer to join his new group, M People. Together they would go on to sell over 10 million albums, marking them out as one of the most successful groups of their type in the 1990s. Notable hits from this period included “Moving on Up” and “Search for the Hero”. Both of them got into the top 10.

In 1997, Small took part in the production of a charity single alongside artists such as Tom Jones and Lou Reed. The song chosen was Reed’s “Perfect Day”. It topped the charts for three weeks in the UK, helping to cement Small’s place in the public’s affection as a lone performer who could be successful with or without her bandmates in M People.

Heather Small's solo career

In 2000, Small struck out on her own as a solo performer. Her debut album came out in June of that year and was promoted by a single called “Proud”, which was also the name of the album. This track has since become Small’s signature tune and it has been successful all over the world. It became the theme tune of the Oprah Winfrey Show for a while, for instance. “Proud” was followed up by the single “Holding On” in November of 2000. Although Small continued to perform occasionally on TV shows at this time, she spent much of her time raising her family and working on new material for follow-up albums. In 2005, an M People retrospective album came out and “Proud” charted once more, following a re-release.

In 2006, Small returned to the fray with Close to a Miracle, her long-awaited second studio LP. She has continued to play to large crowds ever since, notably when she took to the stage at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff along with the Stereophonics in 2008. In recent years, Small has taken to performing old M People songs as well as her solo material.
