Music from off the beaten track at Headrow House
Headrow House in Leeds is primarily a beer hall, but to leave it at that would be to do the place a serious injustice. First of all, it's the epitome of an ultra-modern pub, and secondly, it has established a firm reputation as being one of the elite party spots for lovers of electro and house, as well as a live venue that has played host to a wide cross-section of local performing artists in particular, as well as a fair smattering of overseas artists who have yet to break onto the airwaves in any meaningful way, but who have nonetheless established respectable live followings. European beer culture meets niche live music
Any discussion of Headrow House has to start with its beerhall facilities - despite the high quality of music on the second floor of the venue, its primary attraction are the four massive copper beer tanks containing unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell, delivered fresh from Europe every week. In addition, there are more than 70 other commercial and craft beer brands from the Continent to sample. So this is very much a European-style place to socialise, not to mention eat at the superb restaurant that originated as a street food concept. The live music happens a floor above and the entertainment is of the niche variety, with audiences entertained by artists that they wouldn't ordinarily see on their TV screens. In the past these have included Montreal-raised New York indie singer-songwriter Common Holly, and London's Jelani Blackman. The live floor of the venue can take up to around 150 people, so it's a really intimate venue too, perfect for unplugged performances. Introducing new live artists to the city
Headrow House has also gathered a loyal following for its range of very popular debutante live nights, where almost totally unknown artists get to take the stage and show off what they've got. These "New Friendz" nights have featured artists that you may only know if you're from the Leeds area, like Molly Coddled, Lucy Lu and Weird Milk. The accompanying live gigs have featured Lil Louis and King Nun, to name but two. The roof terrace is where more party action happens, with the Mixtape Project Rooftop Party also a massive success. Partying pretty much never stops upstairs, while downstairs you can sip on a pint and enjoy the DJ's soundtrack in a more relaxed atmosphere. Get your Headrow House tickets on StubHub.
