The building was designed by Bertie Crewe, one of Britain’s leading architects during the theatre boom at the turn of the 20th century. Responsible for some of the finest theatres in the UK (including London’s Piccadilly Theatre and the Palace Theatre Manchester), Crewe was commissioned by theatre entrepreneur Thomas Barrasford to design Glasgow’s luxurious new music hall. Originally named the Pavilion Theatre of Varieties, the building was opened in 1904, showcasing a lavish Louis XV architectural interior complete with Rococo artwork, terrazzo floors and a deep mahogany finish on its wooden details. An eager public elite was invited to its 1,500-capacity auditorium over the following years to marvel at many of the time’s leading performers. Little Tich, Sarah Bernhardt and even a young Charlie Chaplin are just a few of the names to have graced the Pavilion’s stage during its early years. By 1920, the theatre had started to produce pantomimes, a medium it would become renowned for later on, whilst remaining a highly regarded receiving house for plays and comedians. To this day audiences fill the seats and have a blast at this classic British theatre. To see what’s on and buy or sell Glasgow Pavilion Theatre tickets, use StubHub today!
