Starting out in 1950s group The Pips with her brother, sister and cousins, singing sensational Gladys Knight quickly eclipsed the rest of her family. In 1959, the family band were renamed Gladys Knight and The Pips (wonder how her poor relatives felt about that?), and went on to achieve a string of decade-defining hits throughout the '60s including "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and "The Way We Were".

In 1966, the group joined Motown Records and earned their first Grammy Award off the back of shimmering soul pop single "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)".
