Born in Hammersmith, London, Gary Webb developed a keen appreciation for music after his father gave him a Gibson Les Paul guitar aged 15. The vocalist then rose to fame in the '70s as the frontman of new wave band Tubeway Army, producing two albums with them. A major breakthrough arrived with 'Are 'Friends' Electric?' in 1979, which reached number one in the singles charts, prompting renewed success for album Replicas. In 2002, the track was famously sampled by the Sugababes for their smash hit 'Freak Like Me', topping the charts once again.

With Webb acting as both songwriter and producer, he moved to front and centre of the project, naming it after his new stage moniker but retaining his bandmates. The Pleasure Principle, his debut album in this guise, spawned his most iconic hit to date in 'Cars'.
