Ice hockey in the state of sunshine
Founded by businessman Wayne Huizenga, the Panthers were part of the NHL expansion before the 1993-94 season along with the Anaheim Ducks. The team originally played their home games at Miami Arena, experiencing a decent amount of success in the difficult early formative years. In only their third year of competition, the Panthers went on an incredible post-season run by beating first and second seeded opponents the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins. The team's impressive streak could not be continued in the 1996 Stanley Cup playoffs as they were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by the Colorado Avalanche in search of their maiden championship. Following their impressive post-season performance in 1996, the Panthers looked destined for further success when they began the next season with 12 consecutive games without a loss. These fortunes however would not continue as the team suffered a performance decline in the latter part of the season and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Scott Mellanby was a central figure in the success of the Panthers in the late '90s, regarded as one of the best to ever play for the team. A bizarre rat association
The Panthers were named after the large species of endangered puma native to the state of Florida. The team has a mascot, aptly named Stanley Panther, who has an unusual partner, another mascot by the name of Viktor Rat. The story of the Panthers' association with rats' dates back to 1995, when Scott Mellanby infamously struck and killed a wondrous rat that had found its way into the dressing rooms. When this story spread to the team's fans hysteria broke out, leading to a handful of rubber rats being thrown on the field in celebration of a goal. No one could be prepared for the next home match, when in excess of 2,000 rubber rats were thrown onto the rink. The NHL moved quickly to ensure this madness would not become a regular occurrence, however the Panthers games continue to have a unique and distinctive atmosphere.
