Feyenoord: one of the Netherlands' greatest football clubs
Although Feyenoord has enjoyed several names since it was founded in Rotterdam in 1908, possibly one of the most enduring is its nickname 'Club of the People'. The club has gone through some ups and downs in its time, however its fans are famous for being constantly loyal and always enjoy a game - no matter what the result. Matches against main rivals AFC Ajax may cause outbreaks of extreme emotion, and in general, Feyenoord fans will go to great lengths to support their team: in 1963, more than 3,000 fans travelled by special ship to Lisbon for a European Cup match against Benfica. This coincided with the beginning of the club's most successful period in history - the two golden decades of the '60s and '70s saw nine major titles and Feyenoord become the first Dutch team to win both the European and Intercontinental Cups. Having played in the Netherlands' premier division (Eredivisie) continually since 1921, Feyenoord is one of the country's most successful clubs. Playing internationally, Feyenoord tickets are available for matches across the Netherlands and Europe.
Watch the Feyenoord squad in action
Wearing their signature home colours of red, white and black, the Feyenoord squad is renowned for its talented members and solid performance that has only been strengthening in recent years. The Feyenoord stadium, nicknamed De Kuip, opened way back in 1937. Although plans were made from 2016 onwards to build a new stadium, many fans were reluctant to say goodbye to the original building - loyal to their team, they are also loyal to its history. With one exception (Swede Gunder Bengtsson), the club's managers have been exclusively Dutch since 1982 - but the first Feyenoord manager was, surprisingly, Englishman Bill Julian. Under their leadership, world-famous players such as Henrik Larsson and Robin Van Persie (who went on to play for Manchester United) have been nurtured. After struggling with debt and management problems at the turn of the century, the club has been making an explosive comeback and is set for great things in the upcoming seasons.
