FC Metz - Ligue 1's unsung heroes
Formed from the ashes of two amateur athletic teams in the early 1930s, FC Metz went on to become a mainstay of Ligue 1, with more than 60 top-flight seasons under their belt. Nicknamed for their maroon strip, Les Grenats have also won several domestic trophies and given numerous World Cup winners their big breaks. You can catch them in action at the Stade Saint-Symphorien by purchasing FC Metz tickets at StubHub.
Les Grenats' golden years
Founded in 1932, FC Metz wasted little time in establishing themselves as a major force, winning promotion to Ligue 1 just four years later. Sadly, the club were essentially forced to start from scratch in the aftermath of WWII and spent the next two decades bouncing between French football's top two tiers. However, from 1967 they enjoyed a Ligue 1 run that lasted 34 years. During this period, Les Grenats twice won both the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue, finished runners-up in the Intertoto Cup and achieved unarguably their most famous victory, a 4-1 European Cup Winners' Cup defeat of Barcelona at the Nou Camp, which overturned a first-leg 4-2 deficit. They also took the fight for the 1998 Ligue 1 championship all the way to the final day of the season, only narrowly losing out to RC Lens for the title on goal difference. FC Metz tickets are available on StubHub for both their away fixtures and their home games at the Stade Saint-Symphorien.
FC Metz's globe-trotting present
FC Metz's history since the turn of the century has largely been spent yo-yoing between the top two tiers of French football, winning two Ligue 2 titles along the way. The club will now be hoping to restore their former glories under former Saint-Etienne, Nice and Rennes manager Frederic Antonetti and a globe-trotting squad featuring the likes of Argentina's Geronimo Poblete, Mali's Mamadou Fofana, Serbia's Vahid Selimovic and Luxembourg's Vincent Thill. Fans who purchase FC Metz tickets on StubHub may also get to watch several stars of the future in action at the 26,000-capacity Stade Saint-Symphorien. Previous internationals to have pulled on the FC Metz shirt include three-time French player of the year Franck Ribery, 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 winner Robert Pires and Premier League veterans Sebastian Bassong and Louis Saha. Its thriving youth academy has also produced several other major names, such as Cameroon's Rigobert Song, Togo's Emmanuel Adebayor, Bosnia and Herzegovina's Miralem Pjanic and Senegal's Sadio Mane.
