Bunbury and the heroes of Spanish rock

Enrique Ortiz de Landazuri Izarduy was born in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1967. A high school musician, it was perhaps inevitable that he would form a band. When the seminal rock group Heroes del Silencio emerged in the mid-1980s, Enrique was its frontman. He adopted the stage name Enrique Bunbury, naming himself after a fictitious character in Oscar Wilde's play The Importance of Being Earnest. Heroes took Spain by storm for a decade. They produced four studio albums before their break-up in the mid-1990s. Although the band reformed a decade later and went on tour to mark their 20th anniversary, Enrique Bunbury has carved out his own musical destiny ever since. Influenced as much by gypsy, folk and classical music as by rock, he cannot be nailed down to one genre. His first solo album Radical Sonora blended electronic and organic rock, while Pequeño (Small) explored Middle Eastern and Latin American sounds. Enrique Bunbury crosses all the boundaries

Enrique Bunbury does not just cross musical boundaries. He transcends international ones too. He has lived in Cuba and travelled in South America and Africa. He moved to Los Angeles, apparently on the toss of a coin, and made it his adopted city. A Jim Morrison lookalike with his trademark hat and dark glasses, he continues to experiment. His music features everything from rock through to cabaret, ranchero, blues, flamenco, tango and salsa. The MTV Unplugged album incorporated re-imaginings of his familiar songs, involving cameos by ranchero singer Pepe Aguilar and Latin rock singer Zoe. A thoughtful artist, he produced a disc and book called Leopoldo Maria Panero, named after the ill-fated Spanish poet, while his songs include a version of Bob Dylan's Just Like a Woman.
