English Open Snooker: Steve Davis Trophy up for grabs
One of the newest events on the snooker calendar, the English Open has taken place each October since 2016. Part of snooker's new Home Nations Series – along with the Northern Ireland Open (the Alex Higgins Trophy); the Scottish Open (the Stephen Hendry Trophy) and the Welsh Open (the Ray Reardon Trophy) – the tournament cup is named the Steve Davis Trophy in honour of the six-time world champion.
The inaugural event was won by Chinese player Liang Wenbo, who defeated Englishman Judd Trump 9–6 in the final on the way to winning the first ranking title of his career. In the same tournament, Alfie Burden made his first (and snooker's 122rd) official maximum break in his first round match against Daniel Wells. As a result of his victory, Wenbo qualified for the prestigious Champion of Champions event, which takes place each November in Coventry.
The first Home Nations Series event of the snooker calendar, there is a bonus of £1,000,000 for any player who manages to win all four events in the same season. Buy English Open snooker tickets now at StubHub and see the sport's top players live.
English Open Snooker: one of four Home Nations Series events
In 2015, World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn announced a new tournament – the "English Open" – would be added to the main tour in 2016. The inaugural event took place in Manchester, with China's Liang Wenbo winning the title at EventCity. In defence of his title the following season at Barnsley's Metrodome, Wenbo made a maximum break (winning him the "rolling 147 prize" of £40,000) in his second round match against Tom Ford, but lost in the third round to fellow Chinese player Yan Bingtao.
The event was eventually won by the current champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, who beat compatriot Kyren Wilson 9-2 in the final and became the first Englishman to lift the Steve Davis Trophy. With victory, O'Sullivan won his 29th ranking event title to tie in second place with John Higgins on the all-time list of ranking event wins, behind only Stephen Hendry. Since that victory, O'Sullivan has clinched additional ranking event titles to move outright second on the list.
