In search of another dynasty
Having formed in 1971, the Oilers competed in the defunct World Hockey Association for seven years before joining the NHL in 1979. It was not long before the team won its first Stanley Cup with a dominant 4-1 series win against the New York Islanders in 1984. That championship victory was the birth of a dynasty, with the team winning four more titles by 1990. During the 1980s, the line-up was almost impossible to defeat, with a long list of talented and athletic players. The leader of the team throughout the majority of this period was undoubtedly Wayne Gretzky, who many argue to be the best ice hockey player of all time. Gretzky set a long list of records during his playing days with the Oilers and was admired for his ability to read the game and anticipate plays happening before they did. Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988, however that would not prevent the Oilers experiencing more team success as they regathered and won the 1990 Stanley Cup against the Boston Bruins. The presence of the franchise's success can be felt in the air whenever the team plays. Experience it for yourself by purchasing Edmonton Oilers tickets on StubHub.
A rich connection to Edmonton
Edmonton is home to much of Canada's oil industry, with a large part of the city's economy revolving around the manufacturing, processing and refinement of petroleum. It is for this reason that the club was called the Oilers, which is something the fans are proud of, as it connects the team to the city. The team has a Canadian Lynx as its mascot who is named Hunter, an acknowledgment of the founding owner, William 'Wild Bill' Hunter. The Oilers have played their home matches at Rogers Place since 2016, when they moved from the Edmonton Coliseum. The new stadium can host more than 18,000 and has an electrifying atmosphere whenever the Oilers are playing.
