The Dub Pistols are Taking the World by Storm with their Infectious Sound
The Dub Pistols, a dub group that's been around for almost twenty years, are unstoppable! With a sound that keeps evolving, the band is known not only for their studio albums, where they have their roots, but now their live, full-band shows as well.
Schedule
The Dub Pistols have been on the festival circuit all summer, including Bestival, Rock from Churchill and Beat-Herder, and are now embarking on a UK tour, stopping everywhere from Manchester to Sheffield to London. Soon after they'll be heading out on a world tour as well, with stops in Austria, Thailand and Germany planned, among the many countries they'll be visiting.
Trivia
The title of the Dub Pistols newest album (Return of the Pistoleros) came from a name given to them by their fans. The album itself has been described as a mix of dub, hip-hop, punk and ska. They have an international following, playing a show in 2012 in Poland for 100,000 people that was also broadcast to over two million. They've had several guest songwriters and musicians on their various studio albums, including Blade, Rodney P and Terry Hall.
Band
The Dub Pistols were founded by Barry Ashworth (Producer, Vocals, DJ) in 1996. The band now includes Seanie Tee (vocals), Dave Budgen (bass), Jack Cowens (drums), Andreas Jensen (guitar), Tim Hutton (horns) and Jean King (guitar), along with a slew of guests making appearances on their many albums. The Dub Pistols are known for their mix of dub, hip hop and big beat, initially getting their start with acts such as the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim. They cite a wide range of artists as their influences, including The Clash, The Chemical Brothers, Beastie Boys, The Stone Roses and New Order. Given the way their music defies genres, it is not surprising that their influences are such an eclectic mix.
Breakthrough
The Dub Pistols had early hits with the songs "Cyclone" and "There's Gonna Be A Riot." Their ability to combine genres in their electric dub sound gained them attention from artists including Moby and Limp Bizkit, for whom they have done remixes. The attention from this led to tracks on several soundtracks (Blade II, Bad Company and Mystery Men among them), as well as features in video games such as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, NBA Live 08, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 and Dance Dance Revolution X. They were nominated for the 2014 Bass Music Awards for Best Live Act.
Hit Albums
The Dub Pistols received much acclaim for their debut album, Point Blank, when it was released in 1998. Known for giving a rock and roll edge to the dub music scene, the album was applauded for taking dance music to a different level and helping to establish the Dub Pistols in the dance music scene. Their follow-up albums include Point Blank (1998), Six Million Ways to Live (2003), Speakers and Tweeters (2007), Rum & Coke (2009), Re-Hash (2011), Worshipping the Dollar (2012) and their newest album, Return of the Pistoleros (2014).
Show Experience
While they started as a studio band, the Dub Pistols are known for putting on an amazing live show. They've been described as both energetic and hypnotic, raucous and relaxed. Ashworth, known as a party starter, gets the crowd going right away, whether in an intimate venue or at a larger outside festival, and the party doesn't stop until the Dub Pistols leave the stage.
