DJ Shadow: over two decades in the business for acclaimed mixer
Two decades on from his monumental debut Endtroducing..., acclaimed producer and DJ Josh Davis continues to dine at hip-hop's top table. Rising out of the underground hip hop scene, he has found immense critical acclaim since his 1996 breakthrough and celebrated his 20-year anniversary with sixth record The Mountain Will Fall in 2016, featuring the likes of Run the Jewels, Nils Frahm and jazz artist Matthew Halsall.
Renowned for taking rare or previously unheard music samples and reworking them, his new material was lauded by critics as some of his best work yet. Don't miss out when he next makes his way to the UK – get DJ Shadow tickets at StubHub UK.
DJ Shadow: from underground hip-hop to international stardom
While studying at the University of California, Davis started using a four-track recorder, merging elements of multiple genres including funk and jazz to create what would become the new trip-hop style. He rose to prominence in London clubs with his first singles "In/Flux" and "Lost and Found (S.F.L.)", and pioneered the trip hop genre. After a few years with underground hip-hop label Solesides, he branched out on his own to release his first full LP, Endtroducing..., which was named by Time magazine as one of its all-time 100 best albums and found a place in the Guinness World Records for the first fully sampled record.
Preemptive Strike, a compilation of early singles, followed in 1998 before his next full release in 2002, The Private Press. His records often feature rising stars of rap, most notably Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest in 2006 as part of The Outsider, which led to the DJ's first appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. After bringing out The Less You Know, The Better, he spent a few years returning to a more traditional DJ format – playing club nights and the music of his peers – but has since set up record label Liquid Amber and returned with new original record The Mountain Will Fall.
