Digable Planets Background
The Digable Planets is an alternative hip hop trio that launched their career in Brooklyn in the early 1990s. The trio consists of Ishmael Butler ("Butterfly"), Mary Ann Vieira ("Ladybug Mecca") and Craig Irving ("Doodlebug"). After signing a deal with Pendulum Records in 1992, the trio got to work on their debut album, "Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)," which received significant critical acclaim and later achieved gold certification in the US. This debut album proved to be quite a smash success in the hip-hop scene, and it spawned the high-charting hit "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)." After the success of their debut album, Digable Planets got to work on their follow-up release, "Blowout Comb," which dropped in 1994. Although darker and more politically charged, this sophomore album proved to be yet another success of the band, which is why fans were so shocked when the Digable Planets announced their breakup in 1995.
Fortunately for fans of alternative hip-hop, the Digable Planets have returned from their hiatus numerous times over the past couple of decades. The trio has reunited from 2005 to 2011 and most recently returned to the music scene in 2015. Over the course of their career, the Digable Planets have released three studio albums, all of which have met with high praise from major critics and publications. Some of the trio's most successful singles include "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," "Nickel Bags" and "9th Wonder (Blackitolism)." All three of the Digable Planets members have worked on various solo projects over the years, but now you just might have the chance to see these beloved hip-hop artists perform as a unit. If you first discovered the Digable Planets in the early 1990s, you will be thrilled to hear that they are gearing up for another round of live shows. This famed alternative hip-hop act has numerous acclaimed hits in their repertoire, and now you just might be able to see the trio perform these hits at a concert venue near you.
