A young but successful franchise
Previously located in Minnesota and competing under the team name North Stars since 1967, the franchise was moved to Dallas in 1993. Despite being a relatively young franchise, the team has already experienced the ultimate success and developed a strong following of fans. Only six years after relocating to Dallas, the Stars won the 1999 Stanley Cup with a 4-2 series win against the Buffalo Sabres. A dominant team that played with a distinctive edge, they nearly won a second consecutive title in 2000, however narrowly lost to the New Jersey Devils in the finals. The singular Stanley Cup success was almost an unsatisfactory return from the supremacy the Devils held over the Central Division, winning it six times between 1997 and 2003. Critical to the team's success during this period was centre Mike Modano, who represented the club for 16 seasons and is one of the NHL's all-time leading goal scorers with a career tally of 561. Modano went on to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014 and is synonymous with the Stars, having been a part of team since 1988 when they were located in Minnesota. Ice hockey in Texas
When they moved to Texas, the Stars kept part of the previous Minnesota North Stars name, a recognition of the state motto, "The Star of the North". With Minnesota returning to the NHL in 2000 as the newly established Minnesota Wild, an understandable rivalry grew between the team and Dallas. While the competition between the two teams has been healthy and respectful, you can expect the attention of fans across the league to be on the two teams whenever they play each other. The Stars' home rink is the American Airlines Center, a multipurpose stadium that is also home to the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA.
