Cyndi Lauper - Iconic Singer Announces 2016 Tour
In support of her first country music album Detour, this legendary artist is heading out on tour, hitting up the UK for the first time in five years. June 2016 sees the 'Time After Time' singer visit Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle and London with her own interpretations of classic Nashville hits. Her love for the genre began after listening to the likes of Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn as a young child growing up in New York, and with this record she looks to celebrate the power of all the female voices that inspired her career. A rare chance to see this multi-million selling artist live - get Cyndi Lauper tickets on StubHub UK now to ensure you don't miss out.
Cyndi Lauper Biography - Celebrating the Release of 11th Album Detour
Expressing herself with colourful clothing and an eccentric hairstyle, the young Lauper first picked up a guitar aged 12 and began writing her own songs. It wouldn't be until 1978 that she met saxophonist John Turi, and the pair formed the band Blue Angel with Arthur Neilson, Lee Brovitz and Johnny Morelli. Despite positive reviews for their only album, the group disbanded the next year and its singer went back to performing in local clubs. By 1981 though, she was signed as a solo artist and released debut She's So Unusual, which went on to be a worldwide hit, catapulting its singer into the spotlight. It also spawned legendary singles like 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' and 'Time After Time' - which to date has been covered more than 100 times - along with a win for best new artist at the 1985 Grammy Awards. In only a few years she had helped popularize punk and given it a place in the mainstream pop charts in both the UK and US.
The success kept rolling in during the years that followed after releasing two more hit albums, True Colors and A Night to Remember, with the former's title track finding incredible popularity and being used in multiple films and television advertisements. She found particular fame in Japan, most noticeably with albums Sisters of Avalon and Shine in 2001. She's explored different genres in more recent years, including an acoustic compilation reworking all her greatest hits, and Memphis Blues which was nominated for the Best Traditional Blues Album at the Grammys in 2011. She unearthed a talent for theatre music composition in 2010, writing the soundtrack for Broadway musical Kinky Boots, and winning best original score at the 2013 Tony Awards after it opened. The show has proved so successful that it is now storming the West End. 2016 sees the superstar return to the stage herself for a tour celebrating the release of her 11th studio album Detour, a collection of classic country songs.
