Kind hearts and coronets
One of London’s most beautiful Grade II-listed buildings, the Coronet Theatre is set in the centre of London’s Notting Hill. The lively theatre events programme is considered to be an edgy and risk-taking one that regularly receives critical acclaim. Among the international events that take place every year are dance productions, music recitals and live bands, poetry sessions, visual art, film showings and theatre performances. The venue has a cosy and intimate feel to it and can seat an audience of 195 within the theatre itself, with a further 90 seated in The Print Room. The Coronet Theatre was opened in 1898 and the then king, Edward VII, was to become a regular patron. The king enjoyed performances by renowned actresses Ellen Terry and Sarah Bernhardt, and it is believed that the legendary actor and theatre director John Gielgud saw his first Shakespeare play at the theatre. The building was also once used as a cinema but fell into disrepair. Its Grade II listing has led to some restoration of the theatre, which will protect the beautiful heritage landmark for the enjoyment of generations to come. An eclectic entertainment programme awaits you
The theatre itself offers a comfortable and welcoming audience experience and the restored theatre bar is breathtaking. Visitors have described it as a hidden treasure and particularly enjoy the quirky décor. Great past productions at the venue have included the interpretive dance experience "Bells and Spells", "The Tin Drum", "Poetry Club", "Italian Festival Theatre" and pre-show talks. The theatre has also welcomed the Russell Maliphant Company, who have performed a series of works including "The Space Between". This focused on the divide between married couples and Russell himself appeared with his wife Dana Fouras in the production. Lovers of unique theatres will also enjoy visiting London’s Clapham Grand, Courtyard London and Conway Hall. Film buffs may be keen to visit Notting Hill itself and spot landmarks that were featured in the romantic comedy of the same name, starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
