Clutch: American metal mainstays to tour UK in 2018

Clutch: high-school band goes global

Formed in Germantown in the US state of Maryland, bassist Dan Maines, drummer Jean Paul Gaster, guitarist Tim Sult and singer Roger Smalls – later replaced by Neil Fallon – got together in 1990 to form what would go on to become one of the great cult rock acts of its generation. Their debut album Transnational Speedway League (released in 1993) laid down their unique template of funk-infused sludge-rock that would be copied by many, but perfected by few over the following years. It was followed by a self-titled album two years later that gained Clutch mainstream exposure and spawned a number of tracks that still feature heavily in their live shows.

The attention earned the band a move to major record label Columbia, where they released 1998 album The Elephant Riders before following it up a year later with self-released record Jam Room. Moving to Atlantic after just one record with Columbia, the group released Pure Rock Fury in 2001, which included surprise hit single "Careful with that Mic." The track's success paved the way for 2004 album Blast Tyrant to enjoy similar success.

By this point Clutch were the cream of the influential stoner rock movement in the US, but few would have predicted that Earth Rocker (2013) would be their most successful work yet. The critically acclaimed record debuted at Number 15 on the Billboard 200, and Number 6 on the Top Rock Albums chart. Follow up Psychic Warfare (2015) was again lauded by critics before charting in the UK Top 20.
