Christoph Eschenbach had a rough start in life, being born in 1940 in war-torn Nazi Germany to political dissenters. His mother died in childbirth and his father was sent to the Eastern front as punishment for his anti-regime stance. Christoph was adopted by his mother’s cousin in 1946, once the war was over, and it was she who started him on piano lessons. Among his influences, Eschenbach cites the conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who he saw in a performance in 1951. Four years later, Eschenbach would start studying piano and conducting in Cologne and then Hamburg. He studied under some of the brightest and most renowned musicians of his time, but it wasn’t until the 80s that Eschenbach’s career as a conductor took off. He has worked extensively in Europe and the US ever since, establishing himself as one of the heavyweights in the game.
