Once sponsored by the Chili Bowl food company, this midget Nationals race is known simply as The Chili Bowl and is considered vehicle racing's winter nod to the Super Bowl. The event features over 200 race rigs, bleacher accommodations for thousands of sports fans and a large trade show. The Chili Bowl event hosted in Tulsa's River Spirit Expo Center brings together champions from all across the United States. The presence of racing luminaries such as five-time Chili Bowl winner Sammy Swindell is what makes the event one of the greatest Midget racing attractions one is likely to witness. The organizers of this event since the beginning have been Emmett Hahn and Larry Edwards. The River Spirit Expo Center boasts 448,000 square feet for events and showcases all manner of events throughout the year. It is considered one of the largest clear-span buildings in the world. The location boasts one of Tulsa's iconic monuments, a 76-foot-high statue known as The Golden Driller that is a tribute to the petroleum industry, which was erected back in 1966.[4] The statue has served as the grand entrance to the Expo Center since its beginning. At 2:00 PM each day, drivers draw for heat racing starting positions on the chalkboard. A number of heat races occur which then determine the advancement of the racers from heat races to features based upon passing points in the heats.
