The Chicago Football Classic (CFC) represents a chance for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to take the field. This event is the only NCAA college football event to feature only black football players. Everett Rand, Tim Rand and Larry Huggins have referred to the creation as, “A bunch of business guys trying to do good in the hood.“ ” This year, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced the lineup as a drum roll greeted her. The 22nd annual CFC will take place on Sept. 14, 2019, at Soldier Field in Chicago. The Hampton University Pirates host the Howard University Bison. This year’s CFC will also feature a Battle of the Bands between high school marching bands. The bands will compete for a financial prize. Furthermore, the City Colleges of Chicago and the Chicago Public Schools will host a college fair. Students will gain the opportunity to interview and discuss scholarships. Besides college recruitment, a career and trade fair will take place. The fair will offer employment opportunities for students seeking to enter the workforce after graduating from high school. This annual event takes place at Soldier Field in Chicago. The stadium, originally called Municipal Grant Park Stadium, opened on Oct. 9, 1924. In 1925, it became Soldier Field as a dedication to all the US soldiers who died in combat serving the country. Besides showcasing black football players and HBCUs, the event has a family feel. The founders wanted to make sure that HBCUs had a platform to recruit players and keep the schools funded. Players will see that an alternative route exists to playing for a Big Ten or an Ivy League University. Furthermore, to ensure all needed schools gain exposure, the Chicago Football Classic Scholarship Fund pays for all expenses for the competing teams. This includes items like food, lodging and transportation. All the money raised at each annual game goes toward the Chicago Football Classic Scholarship Fund. Both Jackson State and Morehouse College have won back-to-back games. In 2000, Jackson State defeated Howard by a score of 27-16. These two teams squared off again the following year, with the score being almost identical. Jackson State won by a score of 27-17. In 2013, Morehouse College defeated Central State University by a score of 42-20. In 2014, the same match-up took place.
