The Champion League of Darts is an annual professional darts tournament sponsored by Unibet and held in Wales. Organised by the Professional Darts Corporation, the two-day long competition pits the top eight players in the Professional Darts Corporation against each other. Hosted at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff in Wales, the Champion League of Darts is the very first Professional Darts Corporation event to be broadcast on the BBC.
Champion League of Darts's background
The Champion League of Darts hosted its first competition at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff on September 25th through September 26th, 2016. The eight players selected, in order of their Professional Darts Corporation Order of Merit ranking at the time, were Dutchman Michael van Gerwen, Scotsman Gary Anderson, Englishmen Adrian Lewis and Phil Taylor, Scotsman Peter Wright, Englishmen James Wade and Michael Smith and Scotsman Robert Thornton.
In the group stage, Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen emerged victorious from Group A, while Gary Anderson and James Wade topped Group B. In the semi-final round, Phil Taylor beat James Wade 11-3 to advance to the finals, while Michael van Gerwen defeated Gary Anderson 11-5.
In the final match, Phil Taylor emerged as the reigning champion defeating runner-up Michael van Gerwen 11-5. The winner of the Champion League of Darts receives £100,000 in prize money, while the runner-up is awarded £50,000. Other players are also awarded smaller amounts of prize money.
Champion League of Darts qualification and tournament format
In order to qualify to compete in the Champion League of Darts, contestants must rank among the top eight players on the Professional Darts Corporation's Order of Merit, a world ranking system calculated based on the amount of prize money won during the two preceding seasons. Following July's World Matchplay event, the top eight players are determined and informed of their selection for the Champion League of Darts.
The tournament itself is organised with a group stage to begin, followed by a knockout stage. In the group stage, players are divided into two separate groups of four that compete in a round robin format, with each player playing all the other members in the group to determine who will advance to the knockout round. After all of these matches are completed, the best two players in each group advance to the knockout stage. A semi-final round determines the best player in each group, who go on to compete against each other for the title.
