Cardiff Blues - pioneering Welsh rugby union team
Formed in the early 21st Century, Cardiff Blues are one of four Welsh sides who compete in the annual European league known as Pro14. Check out the team in action by purchasing your Cardiff Blues tickets on StubHub.
European Challenge Cup winners
Spawning from semi-professional team Cardiff Rugby Football Club in 2003, professional regional side the Cardiff Blues joined fellow Welsh teams the Newport Gwent Dragons, Ospreys Rugby Union and Scarlets Rugby Union in the Pro14, the European league also featuring teams from fellow Celtic nations Ireland and Scotland as well as others from South Africa and Italy, that same year. Under the guidance of long-term manager Dai Young, the Blues were the highest try scorers in their inaugural season, and three years later finished in the runner-up position behind the Ospreys. The team then repeated the latter feat in 2008 and picked up their first piece of silverware in 2009 when they beat Gloucester in the final of the Anglo-Welsh Cup. They added to their trophy cabinet twelve months later when they defeated Toulon in the European Challenge Cup to become the first Welsh side ever to win a competition on the continent. They lifted it for a second time in 2018 when they once again defeated Gloucester in the final of a major competition. The pride of Cardiff Arms Park
Cardiff Blues play at Cardiff Arms Park, a rugby union stadium that has previously hosted both Commonwealth and World Cup matches as well as several Heineken Cup finals. The team made it their home on their 2003 inception and, following an unpopular three-year stint at Cardiff City Stadium, the home ground of the city's main football side, they moved back in 2012. The Blues are also renowned for their loyal, vociferous support, regularly attracting crowds of 12,000. Fans should expect to see several international players on the pitch, with the likes of Gethin Jenkins, Leigh Halfpenny, Martyn Williams and Sam Warburton just a few of the names who have been called up to the British and Irish Lions while competing for the Cardiff Blues. Although the team are largely homegrown, they have also recruited players from Moldova, South Africa, Georgia, Samoa, United States and New Zealand over the years.
