At that point, Canisius was playing in Division III. The Golden Griffins made the jump to Division I during the 1998-99 season. Coach Cavanaugh, one of the most important figures in Golden Griffins' hockey, was still at the helm. In more recent years, coach Trevor Large has helmed the team. In 2017-18, Coach Large led the team to a 19-win season. Playing in the Atlantic Conference, Canisius faces stiff competition from nearby schools like Robert Morris, Army and Sacred Heart. The Golden Griffins' roster features young forwards like Keaton Mastrodonato and goaltenders like Jacob Barczewski who started over 20 games his freshman season. Where do the Golden Griffins play their home games?The Canisius College Golden Griffins play their home games at the HarborCenter in downtown Buffalo, New York. The HarborCenter complex includes two NHL-sized hockey rinks and Canisius is the primary user of one of them. Their rink can accommodate up to 1,800 spectators. This building opened for the first time in October of 2014. Canisius played to a 3-3 tie with Ohio State in their home opener. Who is the head coach of the Canisius Golden Griffins?The Golden Griffins are helmed by Trevor Large. Formerly an assistant with the Golden Griffins program, Large was promoted to head coach in 2017. During his time at Canisius, Large has coached two candidates for the Hobey Baker Award. He's also helped develop one Mike Richter Award candidate. Large was born in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. He played his college hockey at Ferris State, where he was named the Most Improved Player in 2001. He was on the first Ferris State team to ever make it to the NCAA tournament. With his record of achievement, Large has been very successful in motivating the Golden Griffins. He helped lead them to a regular season conference title in 2016-17. He's also taken them to the Atlantic Hockey conference tournament several times.
