Both teams have a long-standing history of conference and national championships since they were created. During the team's early years, Southern Illinois competed in the Corn Bowl and Shrine Bowl games. The 1947 Corn Bowl gave the team a 21-0 win over North Central College from Naperville. The team won again against Indiana State University in 1949 with a score of 21-0. NCAA football games are always exciting and are even more thrilling when fans have the chance to see them in person. Are there any memorable Busch Stadium College Classic games?Busch Stadium welcomed the Illinois college football rivals in September 2013 to the delight of more than 14,600 fans. SIU successfully defeated SEMO 36-19. It held the lead for the first three quarters until SEMO put on the steam and tied the game 19-19. The Salukis' strategy during the game revolved around using defensive and offensive strategies. They preferred rushing instead of long passes. SIU achieved 153 rushing yards and gained an impressive 17 points in the final 18 minutes of the match. The game proved to be one of the most memorable college football classics.
Isn't Busch Stadium known for baseball?Busch Stadium replaced most of the Civic Center Busch Memorial Stadium in 2005. Although the location is widely known for being the home of the St. Louis Cardinals MLB team, the facility also housed the NFL Cardinals until 1987. Beginning in 2009, high school and college baseball teams began playing games at the stadium. English soccer clubs Chelsea and Manchester City played an exhibition game in Busch Stadium in 2013. Along with its Corn Bowl victory, the team became the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champions and went on to win seven more times. Since 1983, the Salukis have won eight Division I-AA/FCS playoffs. SIU became the NCAA Division I-AA Champions in 1983 with a 43-7 victory over Western Carolina University. Since 1962, 20 SIU football players have enjoyed careers in the NFL.

In 1973, they were classified as NCAA Division II and progressed to NCAA Division I-AA/FCS in 1991. The SEMO team is currently part of the Ohio Valley Conference. Since 1937, the Redhawks have won 18 Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference championships.
