Watch the formidable British and Irish Lions in action
The history of the British and Irish Lions goes back to 1888, when primarily English players with some members from Scotland and Wales were known collectively as the 'Shaw and Shrewsbury Team'. The official name British and Irish Lions has only actually been in use since 2001 - from 1950 onwards, they were simply referred to as the 'British Lions'. International and uncapped players from any of the four Home Nations may be chosen for the team, which is generally considered to display some of the greatest British and Irish rugby talent available today. Some of the most famous players have included Tony O'Reilly (who scored a record-breaking six tries during his 1955-1959 career with the team), top scorer Jonny Wilkinson (who took 67 points between 2001 and 2005), most-capped player Willie John McBride and 2013 and 2017's captain Sam Warburton. With an impressive history behind them and many future legends in their ranks, tickets to British and Irish Lions will guarantee you a thrilling, top quality match.
See thrilling British and Irish Lions fixtures
British and Irish Lions tours are conducted every four years and alternate between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Prior to World War II the squad also toured regularly in Argentina. As of the 2017 tour (against the New Zealand National Rugby Union Team), the British and Irish Lions squad had won the majority of their matches against Argentina and the Australia National Rugby Union Team, but only 17% of those played against New Zealand and less than 40% against South Africa Rugby. Meeting such formidable opponents on the pitch, the team demonstrates their fighting spirit: though the name does actually come from the British and Irish Lions logo that was featured on the team ties in the early 20th century, it could also be attributed to their determination, stamina and ferocity on the pitch. And if waiting until the next tour seems a little bit long, there's good news: in between tours, British and Irish Lions fixtures are held against other nations or international teams, giving their fans more opportunities to see them in action. There's no excuse for missing out on one of these thrilling games - British and Irish Lions tickets are now available to buy or sell on StubHub.
