Brian Culbertson is known in the jazz, funk and R&B communities as a boundary-breaking musician who expresses his musical talents on a vast array of instruments, from the piano to the euphonium. With 16 solo albums and numerous collaborative efforts to his credit, Culbertson has performed more than a thousand concerts in cities across the United States.
Brian Culbertson's background
Brian Culbertson grew up in Decatur, Illinois, and was playing the piano, trombone, bass, drums and the euphonium by the time he was 12. While attending DePaul University, Culbertson began early work on his first CD. It marked the beginning of a career filled with Billboard chart-topping hits, including six songs in the Billboard 200. Another Long Night Out and Dreams topped the Jazz Albums charts, along with another seven albums that reached the top five slots. Seven of his songs have attained the peak position on the Smooth Jazz Songs chart.
Brian Culbertson's awards
The Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards named Brian Culbertson Keyboardist of the Year in 2001, granting him the honor yet again in 2011. In fact, Culbertson swept the Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards that year, gaining recognition as Entertainer of the Year and Male Artist of the Year. His song "That's Life" was recognized as Song of the Year, and his album XII was named Album of the Year. He also won the award for Collaboration of the Year based on his work with Earl Klugh. But that wasn't all: At the American Smooth Jazz Awards that year, he was also named Keyboardist of the Year.
In 2012, he received a nomination for the Soul Train Award for Best Jazz Artist, as well as a nomination for the NAACP Image Award for Best Jazz Album for his work on Dreams.
