Blind Guardian: Middle-Earth Inspired Power Metal
Power metal band Blind Guardian draws inspiration from a wide array of sources, including the Lord of the Rings. The German group's unique sound and energy is especially evident at its fascinating live shows, which feature a variety of visual effects.
Schedule
Although Blind Guardian primarily tours in Germany, the band also appears throughout the rest of Europe and in the United States. It's wise to buy Blind Guardian tickets to their shows as soon as they go on sale, because their loyal fan base grabs them up fast. The group will tour alongside Orphaned Land, appearing in London and Barcelona. The tour will also extend into Russia, where Blind Guardian will perform in St. Petersburg's A2 Club, and at Moscow's Ray Just Arena.
Trivia
Blind Guardian would likely have failed to achieve their current notoriety if they had stuck with their original band name: Lucifer's Heritage. They changed their official name to Blind Guardian primarily to distance themselves from actual satanists. The group also did not like the fact that, due to the familiar-sounding name, local record stores were placing their demo next to black metal albums.Shortly before Peter Jackson made it cool to like Lord of the Rings, Blind Guardian released Nightfall in Middle-Earth, a concept record based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion. A re-telling of the events in the book, Nightfall in Middle-Earth was the first Blind Guardian record to be released in the United States, and it sold so well that their US label decided to release their entire back catalogue.Band
Hailing from Krefeld, Germany, Blind Guardian has been one of the most influential metal bands in the world for nearly three decades. Singer and bassist Hansi Kürsch and guitarist André Olbrich founded the group and have since been joined by the likes of Markus Dörk and Hans-Peter Frey. The current iteration of Blind Guardian features Kürsch and Olbrich, as well as guitarist Marcus Siepen and drummer Frederik Ehmke. Whether classified as power, speed, or just plain heavy metal, there is no denying that Blind Guardian's shredding guitars, blazing fast drum tempos, and dark fantasy inspired lyrics have made them one of the preeminent metal bands of their time.Breakthrough
Blind Guardian was one of the most consistent metal bands in their early years, putting out several records that, while well-received by the band's growing fan base, failed to capture attention on a national level. At the time, the band experimented a great deal with its sound, resulting in a vastly different approach to each early record. The surprisingly popular Somewhere Far Beyond exceeded the expectations of both fans and critics, and allowed for the sale of Blind Guardian tickets outside of Germany for the first time. Blind Guardian's breakthrough record, Nightfall in Middle-Earth, grabbed the attention of metal heads and Tolkien fans worldwide, and is still considered to be the band's most ambitious work to date.Hit Albums
The success of Somewhere Far Beyond allowed Blind Guardian to tour Japan for the first time. Tokyo Tales, the live album that was a result of the tour, proved that the group could translate their incredible technical and artistic skills into an amazing live show. Follow-up releases Imaginations From The Other Side and Nightfall in Middle-Earth would both go on to garner critical acclaim and adoration from metal fans worldwide. The band eventually ditched this original sound for A Night At The Opera, an album inspired by Queen. Just as Lord of the Rings inspired Nightfall in Middle-Earth, George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire gave rise to several songs from Blind Guardian's At The Edge Of Time.Show Experience
Fans adore the frequent allusions to literature, movies, and television shows made during Blind Guardian's concerts. Visuals play a huge role at live shows, with fire, smoke, and lighting effects adding to an overarching sense of foreboding. Crowd participation is encouraged, particularly at Blind Guardian's many open air shows.
