Becoming Black Coffee - Inspired by South African greats

Now a household name among the world of electronic music, Black Coffee was born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo in a township called Umlazi. He later moved to Umtata, birthplace of Nelson Mandela, before heading to Durban, South Africa's third largest city, where he earned a degree in Jazz Studies. Maphumulo's first gig came as a backing singer for Durban legend Madala Kunene, and he went on to form Afro-pop group Simply Hot and Naturally African (SHANA) with a pair of friends from school. The trio signed to Robert Trunz's record label MELT 2000, a venture the Swedish producer launched to discover indigenous music from Jazz, African and World genres. In 2003, Maphumulo was selected for the Red Bull Music Academy festival in Cape Town, which flung him into the spotlight of African dance music. Maphumulo became Black Coffee upon the release of his debut self-titled album in 2005, which featured the breakthrough hit 'Stimela', a remix of a song by the godfather of South African jazz, Hugh Masekela. Fusing traditional African sounds with modern electro styles
