Founded in 1946, the Birmingham Royal Ballet has performed some of history's most renowned ballets while attracting world-recognized talent to its ensemble. Although the BRB respects the great works that they perform, the works are improved by fresh and exciting choreography and the brightest talent in the field.
The BRB performs a rotation of shows including Swan Lake, adaptations of Shakespeare's dramas, and the Christmas classic The Nutcracker. The company also regularly holds special events, allowing audiences to get a unique perspective of the ballet. On select dates, the company will discuss the production before the show or allow audiences to observe a rehearsal, allowing ballet enthusiasts to experience the hard work and preparation involved in staging the ballet. Although the BRB is the resident company of the Birmingham Hippodrome, they frequently tour, appearing in London, Southampton and Salford.
The BRB has performed over 100 different productions, and is dedicated to discovering and showcasing the newest talents in the art. The company has partnered with the Elmhurst School for Dance, the oldest dance vocational school in the UK. Although the BRB formerly operated its own school in London, the company moved to Birmingham in 1990 when it became the resident ballet company of the historic Birmingham Hippodrome.
The current cast includes many award-winning principles and talented soloists. Cesar Morales is one of the most renowned dancers currently performing, and has won awards for his performances around the globe. Jamie Bond has been performing ballet professionally since a young age, gaining recognition on multiple occasions as an outstanding young dancer, and has continued to be recognized as he gained experienced and matured as an artist. The company recently added principal performer Jenna Roberts, whose extensive experience led to the BRB creating new roles in several productions for her.
The BRB performs work from the greatest composers and choreographers. The company is well known for their production of Swan Lake, composed by Russian great Pyotr Tchaikovsky, with choreography by Peter Wright. The company is also known for their annual winter production of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, a ballet that is a popular Christmas tradition for many families. The Birmingham Royal Ballet is also performing an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Sergei Prokofiev composed the score, and the production is choreographed by the award-winning Sir Kenneth MacMillan. The company is also performing Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew and A Midsummer Night's Dream, and occasionally perform the three ballets together in a triple Shakespeare billing.
David Bintley (CBE) is the current artistic director of the Royal Birmingham Ballet, and has directed the show's productions since 1995. Bintley was originally trained as a dancer, and was named resident choreographer of the Royal Ballet in 1985. After several successful years, Bintley joined the Royal Birmingham Ballet, where his artistic successes were recognized by the Queen in her Birthday Honours in 2001. He is also the co-director of the New National Theatre in Tokyo. Keon Kessels has been the BRB's music director since 2010. He joined the company in 2008 as a conductor, and still occasionally conducts productions for the company. In addition to his work at the BRB, Kessels teaches at Birmingham University, and is a member of the artistic direction team at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp.
