Together, Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken are Big Gigantic - a duo who combine electronic music with live instruments and vocals from featured artists. They are based in Boulder, Colorado, but play to rapt crowds at major U.S. festivals like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Coachella, and have also become regulars on the UK and Australia tour circuits.
Critics say that Big Gigantic tour performances are at turns entrancing, energising and uplifting, mixing music with an ever-evolving stage show that often includes tiered LED screens and 3D light projections.
Big Gigantic's background
Lalli and Salken founded Big Gigantic in 2008, interpreting traditionally DJ-produced sounds on live instruments. The result was their very own niche, fusing trap bass lines, funk, horns and Lalli's signature jazz-inspired saxophone lines into what music critics have dubbed a "transcendent" blend of sound.
Both musicians have a deep well of musical experience to draw from: Lalli, who plays saxophone, the keyboard and produces, has a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music; Salken, usually featured on drums, has extensive touring experience with a number of acts. Both sometimes also appear as part of the music supergroups Gigantic Underground Conspiracy and Big Grizmatik, the latter a partnership with the artists known as GRiZ and Gramatik.
Big Gigantic's discography
While many touring bands seem to dislike the studio, Big Gigantic has embraced it since the very beginning, releasing their first album, Fire It Up (2009), just a year after their formation. Wide Awake (2009), A Place Behind the Moon (2010), Nocturnal (2012), The Night Is Young (2014) and Brighter Future (2016) soon followed, with the latter two released under their own label, Big Gigantic Records.
The pair have also enjoyed notable success with single releases. In particular, "Get On Up," released in 2015, broke through to the mainstream after it was featured on the hit U.S. television show, So You Think You Can Dance, in a national commercial for Mountain Dew and in the trailer for the film Dirty Grandpa.
The next year, Big Gigantic's single "The Little Things" also triumphed. It was featured in Entertainment Weekly's "Best Songs of the Week," reached No. 2 on the iTunes Electronic Singles chart and hit the Top 5 on Spotify's Global Viral 50 chart. In fact, Big Gigantic have mastered the art of the viral trend, with their new tracks routinely soaring to a million listens within a short time of their release.
Big Gigantic career milestones
Many musical groups tour and participate in festivals, as do Big Gigantic - but not many groups can say that they are the festival. Starting in 2011, Big Gigantic originated the two-day Rowdytown festival, an annual celebration in Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, which routinely sells out far in advance.
