Bibi Blocksberg was created by British-Austrian author Ellen Donnelly and initially ran as a children’s audio series in the 1980s. The episodes follow the adventures of young witch and practical joker Bibi, whose magical antics with her friends often get her in trouble with her mother, Barbara Blocksberg, and the lazy, incompetent town mayor, Bruno Pressak. Despite her cheeky character, Bibi has a strong heart and often helps her friends and the townspeople out of injustices. Bibi’s surname is a reference to the Brocken, the highest peak of the Harz mountains that was traditionally known as Blocksberg. The area is often connected with witches in German folklore, most notably in Goethe’s ‘Faust’. The loveable witch is such a popular character that many collectors to this day seek out recordings of the original audio series, particularly the older ones. Although it has come a long way since then! In 1995, the audio series was adapted into an animated tv show, and there have also been two feature films about Bibi: ‘Bibi Blocksberg’ in 2002 and ‘Bibi Blocksberg und das Geheimnis der blauen Eulen’ in 2004.
