Beverley Knight Biography - From Soul to West End Successes
Born in Wolverhampton, this artist began her singing career in church where she was exposed to Gospel music and the works of Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin. During her teenage years she began to experiment with writing her own material and was chosen to provide vocals for songwriter Westley Jones' demos. Dome publishing took notice and signed the burgeoning star in 1994. Her debut The B-Funk dropped in 1995 and was hailed by many critics as the best British soul album ever. She subsequently moved to Parlophone Records, releasing sophomore LP Prodigal Sista. That saw her star rise further, with single 'Greatest Day' giving the singer a top 20 hit and winning her a MOBO Award.
Her third album was the most commercial successful to date, landing in the charts at number seven and spawning popular single 'Shoulda Woulda Coulda'. Many critics saw it as a change in direction for the singer, with tracks bearing a raw honesty and soul unseen in previous works. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2002 and earned her two Brit Award nominations. Inspired by her friendship with Tyrone Jamison, who died of an AIDS-related disease in 2003, her next album Affirmation was praised for its bravery as the singer began to move into the mainstream. She would see similar success with Voice - The Best of Beverley Knight in 2006, after touring with Take That on their reunion tour. The next few years would see the artist break from her label in order to release her new album 100% independently, as well as taking a panelist spot on ITV's Loose Women. Taking a temporary step away from her pop career, the star made her debut on the West End in 2013 as Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard the Musical. This would lead to future roles in Memphis and the revival of Cats. In 2016, she makes her long-awaited return to music with a new album and a full UK tour - so keep an eye out for further announcements and get your Beverley Knight tickets on StubHub UK.
