Ben Folds Biography - Bringing Together Classical and Pop Music with So There
Whilst growing up in North Carolina, this aspiring musician listened to the likes of Elton John on the radio and began to learn the piano by ear. In the late '80s, he formed Majosha with friend Millard Powers, performing at bars and universities across the area before Folds was offered a publishing deal in Nashville, playing as a session drummer for a short while. After a brief stint in New Jersey and musical theatre, he returned to Carolina and formed Ben Folds Five with bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee in 1994. Despite being a trio, they felt the name sounded better with five. The band attracted attention with the release of their enjoyably irreverent self-titled debut, which included songs that poked fun at the popular alternative scene of the moment. Focusing on pure pop melodies and piano driven tracks, second album Whatever and Ever Amen marked the beginning of commercial success for the group, with stand-out tracks like 'Brick'. Before splitting they released The Unauthorised Biography of Reinhold Messner in 1999, a humorous record full of energetic tracks.
Playing nearly all the instruments, the singer released his debut solo record Rockin' the Suburbs in 2001, marking a new era in his music. This was followed by a number of EPs before second LP Songs for Silverman dropped in 2005, reaching number 13 on the Billboard 200 and featuring Weird Al Yankovic on backing vocals for track 'Time'. Greater success came with 2008 album Way to Normal which performed even better commercially, earning him a place as a judge on NBC's a cappella competition The Sing-Off. His next project would be an innovative collaboration with author Nick Hornby on Lonely Avenue, before a look back at his career so far on Retrospective: The Best Imitation of Myself 1995-2011. That featured a new track with his old bandmates, who reunited in 2012 to release The Sound of the Life of the Mind, and continue to perform together. Elsewhere, collaborations with classical sextet yMusic and the Nashville Symphony orchestra resulted in So There, which includes a wonderful 21 minute piano concerto. The multitalented artist brings his solo tour across the Atlantic in June 2016, so grab Ben Folds tickets now from StubHub UK.
