Banks: rising star continues on journey to pop greatness
Born Jillian Rose Banks in 1988 in California's Orange County, Banks taught herself piano as a teenager before getting her break on SoundCloud. Her tunes pricked up ears in the industry and she soon bagged a deal with Good Years Recordings, releasing her debut single "Before I Ever Met You" in February 2013. Early fans included BBC Radio 1 tastemaker Zane Lowe, and the plaudits continued to pour in with the release of her EP, Fall Over. Lauded by the likes of Billboard, Banks went on to be an MTV Brand New Nominee in 2014, was dubbed artist of the week by Vogue, and was shortlisted for the feted BBC Sound Of list in 2014 (eventually finishing third; no disgrace given the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Florence + the Machine took bronze in preceding years).
Debut album Goddess confirmed her place as one of 2014's brightest hopes, before she toured with The Weeknd for the second time a year later; opening for his The Madness Fall tour.
She announced on June 8, 2016 that she had finished work on her follw-up album, with the second single "Gemini Feed" premiering on Annie Mac's Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1. The third single from the album "Mind Games" was released in August 2016, while fourth single "To The Hilt" was released two weeks before the album on 16 September 2016. Exactly two years after releasing her first album, The Altar became her second studio release, and was praised for both its mesmeric song craft and gigantic choruses.
