The Sport that Captivated a Nation
The People's Republic of Bangladesh lies in South Asia, bordering India to the West and Myanmar to the East. Known for its fine cuisine, bustling cities and dense jungle (home of the Bengal Tiger), Bangladesh is a relatively small country with a big population. In fact, it's the eighth most populous country in the world, and most of this population will choose cricket as their favourite sport. Up until the 1990's, however, it was football that took the top spot in the hearts of the people. Bangladesh had only taken its first steps into international cricket in 1979, playing a limited overs tournament in England. It played its first One Day International match against Pakistan in 1986 and from there, popularity grew, surpassing football in the 1990s and becoming the national game. In 1997, Bangladesh won the International Cricket Council Trophy, thus qualifying for the 1999 Cricket World Cup to be held in England, where the team displayed a great performance defeating Pakistan and Scotland. By 2000, the Bangladesh cricket team would be granted full membership of the International Cricket Council, becoming the tenth Test-playing nation. See this team full of excitement, passion and intensity as they take on competition from across the world. Bangladesh Cricket tickets are available to buy and sell via StubHub now!
A Big Test as a New Test Team
Test cricket was a huge deal to the people of Bangladesh, and it was taken very seriously. When he learned of Bangladesh's promotion to Test status, then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh addressed it as the happiest hour of the nation as thousands of people celebrated on the streets and beyond. However, they would have to wait until 2004 for their first One Day International win as a full member of the International Cricket Council. Zimbabwe were on the losing end that day. As a Test team, Bangladesh has won 10 of the 108 it has played, defeating the likes of England, Sri Lanka and Australia. They have met more success in One Day International matches, where their win to loss ratio is far better. Nevertheless, Cricket remains synonymous with Bangladesh, stadiums across the country are filled to the brim and the love of the game will stay with them forever. You can now experience the energy of the team, the fans and the whole crowd live as StubHub gives you the chance to buy and sell your Bangladesh Cricket tickets now!
