Two years passed with no team in the Maryland city, until businessman Ted Leonsis, owner of the NBA’s Washington Wizards and WNBA Washington Mystics started the Brigade with expansion team approval from the AFL. What is the Baltimore Brigade’s record? While the Blackbirds and Mariners did not turn out winning seasons, the Brigade quickly improved. It experienced a dismal inaugural season in 2017, finishing the second-to-last in the league. The team kept working at it though and significantly improved in 2018, hosting the Arena Bowl at Royal Farms Arena. They beat the Philadelphia Soul in the AFL’s two-game aggregate playoff series to get there. It lost the Bowl game to the Washington Valor with a score of 69 to 55. During 2019, the Brigade finished the season 7 to 5, making the playoffs, but losing to AFL champions Albany Empire in the bowl game.
What is the attendance like at Baltimore Brigade home games?Despite their strength as a team after their first year, the Brigade experienced rather dismal home game attendance. During the 2017 season, the average home game attendance was 5,679 fans. By 2019, the attendance decreased to 4,677 individuals. The team did draw a larger crowd when it hosted the Arena Bowl. Its fans also turned out for the away bowl game in 2019 which attracted 12,042 individuals.
How is arena football different from traditional football?Established in 1987, the AFL introduced indoor American football to US fans. The rules bear a close resemblance to those used in the NCAA and NFL, but all games get played in indoor arenas making the game more comfortable for players and fans. No weather conditions can affect play nor make it uncomfortable to be a spectator. The AFL plays a 12-game schedule.
What led to the AFL format change? The AFL economic model struggled during the early 2000s and the league had to take a break year in 2009. It resurged in 2010 and was undergoing an expansion from four teams to six teams when it was hit with a lawsuit from a former insurance provider regarding unpaid worker's compensation insurance premiums during the years 2009 and 2012. It has currently suspended play as it did in 2009. Its leadership says it may transition to a traveling league similar to that of the Premier Lacrosse League. At the time of its most recent suspension for reorganization, the AFL has six teams – the Blackjacks, the Brigade, the Destroyers, the Empire, the Soul and the Valor.
