Auburn Tigers History
Auburn University has been a pillar of Alabama culture since 1856, and while its name may have changed a few times during the university's early years its tradition of excellence in education and athletics has not wavered. Playing in the SEC means that the Tigers annually match up against some of the other premier college athletics programs in the country no matter what the sport and fans can expect nothing but the highest level of competition from both the Auburn Tigers and whatever university dares to compete against them. Previously known as the East Alabama Male College, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, and Alabama Polytechnic Institute, the university was renamed Auburn University in 1960 as a way to represent the widening fields of study going on at the campus. Over the years Auburn alumni and fans have justifiably earned a reputation as some of the most loyal and enthusiastic supporters in all of college athletics and from the first time you witness an Auburn athletic competition in person you will understand why. Whatever sport you prefer, the Auburn Tigers are sure to have an excellent program for you to go out and support alongside thousands of other vociferous Tigers fans.
Auburn Tigers Football
There is no other college sport that evokes more emotion from dedicated Auburn Tigers fans than college football. Whether the Tigers are facing off against their bitter rivals the Alabama Crimson Tide, another SEC foe, or any other NCAA football program, the Tigers will be laying it all on the line on the gridiron for their teammates, the fans, and Auburn University pride. The Auburn Tigers have a proud football tradition dating back all the way to 1892 that includes two claimed national titles, eight unclaimed national titles and three Heisman trophy winners. Notable players including Bo Jackson and Cam Newton have donned the Navy and Burnt Orange for the Tigers and the squad is constantly reloading with future NCAA and NFL legends. The 2013-2014 Tigers made an impressive run late in the season that saw them win the SEC and play for the National Championship. While they wound up finishing runners-up after losing a tight championship game to the Florida State Seminoles, the 2014-2015 Tigers will use that as motivation all season long as they look to make a return to the championship game. As always the Tigers have a fully loaded roster this season, one replete with future college football legends and NFL draft picks so be sure to make it out to Jordan-Hare Stadium this year to get in on the action. When it comes to the college football experience nothing beats catching an Auburn Tigers home game.
Auburn Tigers Basketball
The Auburn Tigers basketball team has been in existence for almost 100 years, dating all the way back to 1905. While the football team garners most of the national attention for the university, the men's basketball team is exciting in its own right. Several former Auburn Tigers have gone on to successful NBA careers, most notably basketball legend Charles Barkley. The Tigers have gone to eight NCAA Tournaments with the last trip being in 2003. After the end of the 2013-2014 season the Tigers scored a big win off the court with the signing of superstar coach Bruce Pearl who will be turning things around quickly for the Tigers starting in the 2014-2015 season. It shouldn't be long before the Tigers are recognized as one of the true basketball powerhouses in the SEC right alongside perennial favorites like Kentucky and Florida.
Auburn Tigers Baseball
The Auburn Tigers are looking to make a return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010 when they made it to the Regional Final. First year coach Sunny Golloway has his work cut out for him playing in the tough SEC, and a few tough losses earlier in the season could come back to haunt the Tigers, but his team is not about to give up, especially knowing that a strong finish to the regular season and a good run in the SEC Tournament could see the Tigers making their way to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four seasons. These Tigers are hungry to make it to the postseason, especially as it will be the last chance for some of the squad's key players. Get out and support the Tigers as they look to make the 2014 season one to remember.
In addition to the more publicized sports like football, basketball, and baseball, the Auburn Tigers have proud traditions in swimming and diving, women's golf, equestrian, track and field, and more. The university has won almost 20 intercollegiate national championships with the most championships coming in men's swimming and diving. The school's colors were chosen by George Petrie, Auburn's first football coach who had attended the University of Virginia and modeled the colors after those of his alma mater.
