Record-breaking R&B chart action
Not long after she was spotted and signed to Chris and Irv Gotti's tongue-in-cheek Murder Inc., Ashanti was featured on two of the biggest singles of the year, "What's Luv" by Fat Joe and the Jah Rule hit, "Always On Time", replacing Brandy on the latter at the last minute. This gave her two chart-topping songs at the same time, with the distinction that neither of them were her own releases. At the same time, she'd released her own debut album, eponymously titled, which spawned the single "Foolish", a song that also shot to the top reaches of the Billboard charts. Little could she have known at the time that this made her only the second artist in the entire history of the Billboard charts to have had their first three singles in the top ten at the same time. The only other artist to have achieved this was The Beatles! And this was almost the least of the achievements the album racked up in a remarkable year for the young singer. It won no less than eight Billboard Music Awards, and won the Grammy in 2003 for Best Contemporary R&B Album. She also found time to write for and sing "Ain't It Funny" with Jennifer Lopez, which also landed at number one on the Billboard charts. Clearly, Ashanti tickets are not to be sniffed at when they're on offer!
Breaking out into film and TV
Ashanti, as we all know, has since gone on to superstar R&B status, releasing many more successful albums and collaborating on songs with a slew of high-profile artists, including Busta Rhymes and French Montana. She then made the move to producing and acting, landing several roles in films and TV productions, like "Resident Evil", "Malcolm X", "Sabrina the Teenage Witch", "Army Wives" and the 2019 remake of the "Dynasty" series. She's even trodden the boards in theatres, playing the lead role of Dorothy in the African-American musical retelling of The Wizard of Oz, "The Wiz". It's her voice that has been her greatest asset: a genuine soprano, she is able to take on the most challenging songs and turn them into pop hits. She cites Mary J Blige as her biggest influence, and the reason she wanted to become a singer in the first place. There's no record of it, but we're sure her idol will be rightfully proud of what she's achieved. You can hear this remarkable singer any time you find Ashanti tickets on StubHub.
