Once known as the Chicago Cardinals, the Arizona Cardinals were founded in 1898 when Chris O'Brien created the Morgan Athletic Club. The Cardinals' name would come about when O'Brien described the used jerseys gifted to the team by the University of Chicago as "cardinal red." The Cardinals are charter members of the NFL, but they can track their history all the way back to the 1920s when they entered the American Professional Football Association. At the time, a team called the Tigers was also vying for franchise rights in Chicago. The two rivals settled the score in a football game. After winning, the Cardinals played in Chicago for the next 39 years. The franchise moved to St. Louis in 1960 and played in the Gateway City until 1987. In the following year, the Cardinals moved to Phoenix and eventually became known as the Arizona Cardinals.
