Arch Enemy: Sweden's Death Metal Prodigies
Swedish death metal band Arch Enemy sets itself apart with the near exclusive use of female singers. The band's commanding stage presence and unique energy has allowed it to emerge at the pinnacle of the death metal scene.

Arch Enemy is an international phenomenon, touring throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan. This fall, the band will be touring Canada with Kreator, with stops at Edmonton's Union Hall and Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom. The band will complete its tour in the United Kingdom this winter, with appearances at Bristol's 02 Academy and The Forum in London.

The band is surprisingly popular in Japan, where death metal is a growing phenomenon. The band's debut album Black Earth, was a Japanese hit and album Burning Japan Live was initially released only in Japan before fan demand pushed for its global release. The Japan Beast Feast concert has featured the band in its lineup alongside big names such as Motörhead and Slayer.
Lead singer Alissa White-Gluz was a fan of the band for years before longtime singer Angela Gossow stepped down and passed the torch. Gossow became the band's manager.Band
The band is based in Halmstad, Sweden -- an area with a thriving death metal community. Guitarist Michael Amott and vocalist Johan Liiva were previously a part of Carnage, a short-lived Swedish death metal band. The two recruited Michael's brother Christopher and former Eucharist drummer Daniel Erlandsson to join their new band.
After releasing ten albums and undergoing several lineup changes, the band now features founding members Michael Amott and Erlandsson with new members Sharlee D'Angelo on bass, Nick Cordle on guitar and White-Gluz at the front of the stage.
Breakthrough
The band's rise through the ranks of the death metal scene began with the second record, Stigmata. Although Black Earth was a hit in Europe and Japan, Stigmata was the band's first record to be released worldwide. This new-found exposure enabled the band to perform at some of the biggest metal festivals in the world, alongside established acts such as DragonForce, In Flames and Slayer. With each new release, the band picked up scores of new fans and followers.
Hit Albums
After gaining a cult following in Europe and Japan thanks to their first two successful albums, the band was ready to show the world what Swedish death metal is all about. After playing shows throughout Europe and the world, the band released Anthems of Rebellion, their fifth album, which would go on to become one of renowned death metal record label Century Media's most popular releases. Albums such as Rise of the Tyrant and Khaos Legions landed on music charts in Europe, the United States and Japan. Tenth studio album, War Eternal, debuted at number 44 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
