Aoife O'Donovan's background
Irish-American by birth, Aoife (pronounced EE-fuh) O'Donovan was raised in Massachusetts and nurtured her Irish heritage spending summers in Ireland with her extended family, studying traditional Celtic music and dance. O'Donovan has said she grew up immersed in all kinds of music and began singing a wide variety of roots music at an early age.
While studying at the New England Conservatory of Music, she formed the progressive bluegrass band Crooked Still with fellow students Rushad Eggleston, Gregory Liszt, and Corey DiMario. Crooked Still soon became sought-after performers throughout the United States as they recorded and toured extensively throughout the 2000s.
O'Donovan is also a member of Sometymes Why, a noir-folk trio of female singer-songwriters with two albums to their credit.
Recently, O'Donovan joined forces to tour with Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz as the I'm With Her combo, with the trio acclaimed by the New York Times as "three Americana virtuosos". She also appeared as guest vocalist on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, a recording with Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan. Performances with the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Utah Symphony Orchestra attest to O'Donovan's musicality and ability to expand her musical horizons.
Aoife O'Donovan is a member of the house band for the Prairie Home Companion radio program, performing duets with Sarah Jarosz.
