Amorphis began in 1990 after its founding members came together during the demise of previous bands and projects. Jan Rechberger was playing in thrash metal band Violent Solution, and vocalist/guitarist Tomi Koivusaari was working on the formation of death metal band Abhorrence. Both projects dissolved, and the two came together to form Amorphis, bringing in fellow musicians they knew as friends and from other bands in the scene. After they recorded their first demo tape, Disment of Soul, prestigious independent metal label Relapse Records offered the guys a huge contract. Their debut album, The Karelian Isthmus, came in 1992, followed by Tales from the Thousand Lakes in 1994, a concept album based on the Kalevala. The Kalevala is a 19th century work of huge importance to the Finnish identity. An enormous epic poem, compiled by physician and philologist Elias Lönnrot, the works feature ballads and poems from Karelian and Finnish folklore and mythology. Amorphis became known for their use of the Kalevala in finding inspiration for their lyrics and songs, using it to promote the Finnish language and identity. The band took a hiatus after their third album, Elegy, in 1996. But the metal doesn't stop there, after a short break, they continued to bring the noise! After three years laying low, Amorphis returned with a new sound, releasing 1999's Tuonela, a surprisingly soft, guitar-based album, with clean vocals taking prominence over the usual death screams. The album also featured sitar, saxophone and flute, giving a unique sound to traditional death metal. This kind of experimentation continued into Am Universum, a psychedelic delight that saw the beginning of Amorphis' shift from death metal to a more progressive and folk metal style. Later albums brought widespread critical acclaim for the band. Their 11th effort, Circle, earned Metal Hammer's prestigious album of the year award in 2012. 2015's Under the Red Cloud led to a huge world tour with fellow metal giants Nightwish and Arch Enemy. Amorphis are also prominent festival performers, playing the metal circuit regularly, including Germany's Wacken Open Air, 70000 Tons of Metal and Maryland Deathfest among many, many more. Catch the metal gods live where ever they may be, with Amorphis tickets ready to buy and sell through StubHub right now.
