Fresh new talent on the classical music scene
Born in the town of Essen, Germany in 1987, Alexej Gerassimez is one of three talented brothers who have made music their careers. His brother Wassily Gerassimez is an accomplished cellist, while sibling Nicolai Gerassimez instead adopted the piano. A composer and percussionist, Gerassimez is making a name for himself as a disruptor of sorts in the classical music genre. Refusing to be put in a box, Alexej uses his creative talents to explore the use of objects other than just the recognised orchestral and melodic percussion instruments to perform his compositions. He has masterfully integrated brake discs, ship propellers, bottles and barrels into his performances, much to the delight of his audiences. A confident solo performer, Gerassimez also partners up with the jazz pianist Omer Klein and the young, upcoming brothers Arthur and Lucas Jussen. Audiences are thrilled when Alexej takes to the stage, whether he is performing his own compositions or putting his own stamp on other artists’ work. Alexej Gerassimez tickets sell out, so StubHub recommend buying them ‘Allegro!’
Roll over with Beethoven
Alexej Gerassimez was proud to have been included in the 2020 celebrations in honour of the composer Beethoven's 250th anniversary. The composer John Psathas was commissioned to create a new percussion concerto for the anniversary for Gerassimez to perform as part of the global "Pastoral Project", headed by the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat and the Düsseldorf Tonhalle. Gerassimez describes himself as being ‘as multi-faceted as the instruments he plays’ in genres from contemporary and jazz, to minimal and classical music. He enjoys performing his own works but also embraces opportunities to solo with internationally renowned orchestras in venues around the world. His early musical instincts were brought to life in the kitchen at his childhood home in Essen, where he would use cookie jars, table tops and cooking pots as makeshift percussion instruments, and many of these still make an appearance in his work today. His good looks and incredible talent have naturally earned him an ever-increasing fan base with audiences across the globe.
