Alcorn State is one of the largest HBCUs in Mississippi. Founded in 1871, this school has a great tradition when it comes to football. Alcorn fielded its first football team back in 1921. It was an independent team until 1941. From 1941 to 1962, Alcorn played in the South Central Athletic Conference, which was comprised of HBCUs located in the South. Since 1962, Alcorn has been part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. ASU has won the SWAC championship 12 times. The Braves have taken home five Black College National Championships in 1968, 1969, 1974, 1984 and 2014. Alcorn State football is not just about the game on the field, however. The Sounds of Dyn-O-mite band was founded in the 1960s. It has over 190 members. The Golden Girls dance line is known as the Mother of All Dance Lines, since it was the first to go baton-free. The Alcorn State Braves play its home games at Jack Spinks Stadium. Named for the Alcorn football great who went on to play for the Steelers, Packers and Giants, the stadium seats 22,500 people. The playing surface is natural grass. Jack Spinks Stadium opened in 1992. Prior to that, the Braves played in Henderson Stadium, which seats just 10,000 fans. Henderson Stadium still hosts track and field events.
