The college's athletic teams were all called “ ”Zippers“ ” as a nod to a particular brand and type of rubber boots that were popular at the time. After spending a few years there, the Zips became a Division I-AA team in 1980 and was the first team to move to Division I-A. At the start of the 1893 season, the school hired the legendary John Heisman — of the Heisman Trophy — to coach both the football and baseball teams. A single-game season against the Ohio State Buckeyes led to the Zips' first undefeated season under Heisman.
