Akron Zips Football TicketsThe Akron Zips football team began in 1891. During this time, The University of Akron was still called Buchtel College. The college officially became The University of Akron in 1913. The college's athletic teams were all called “ ”Zippers“ ” as a nod to a particular brand and type of rubber boots that were popular at the time. The Zips played as part of a small college school until 1973. After this, the team was awarded Division II status. After spending a few years there, the Zips became a Division I-AA team in 1980 and was the first team to move to Division I-A. At the start of the 1893 season, the school hired the legendary John Heisman — of the Heisman Trophy — to coach both the football and baseball teams. A single-game season against the Ohio State Buckeyes led to the Zips' first undefeated season under Heisman. More than 20 coaches since Heisman have worked to refine the Zips into the team it is today. Grab your Akron Zips football tickets at StubHub.
