Ahmad Jamal Biography - Award-Winning Pianist

A born performer, this jazz genius was already tinkering the ivories by the age of three, after his uncle challenged him to duplicate what he was playing. His formal training began at the age of 7 before he immersed himself in the jazz scene of Pittsburgh, drawing inspiration from the likes of Mary Lou Williams and Earl Hines. By 14 years old he was playing piano professionally under the tutelage of James Miller and often performed with his door open in the hopes that a passing by talent scout would discover him.

After high school he moved to Chicago and jammed regularly with local musicians, eventually recording his first sides with The Three Strings in 1951. The group would find fame after performing at New York City's Embers where they were seen by John Hammond and signed to Okeh Records, who led the group on to critical acclaim. The threesome released live album But Not for Me, which occupied the 10 the best-selling charts for 108 weeks, giving rise to Jamal's signature song 'Poinciana'. Now considered to be the most successful of jazz's small-group leaders, this wonderful performer still bears an unprecedented influence on the shape of jazz today.
