Afropunk Festival: the making of a movement
Originating from a 2003 documentary exploring the lives of black punks in America, Afropunk would come to define a generation of young black Americans producing alternative music. In a world heavily influenced by mainstream tracks, the new genre gave young music makers the chance to look beyond society's boundaries to create something new, fresh and exciting. Driven by a strong online community, it soon grew to influence not only music but to grow into its very own culture.
Co-founded by Mathew Morgan and New York tattoo artist James Spooner, the inaugural festival took place in Brooklyn, New York in 2005, and was a celebration of nonconformity in music and art. Ten years later, the organisers reached across the world and held a festival in Paris, before expanding to London for the first time in 2016. The exciting event was one of the most powerful new festivals to hit the scene, and has attracted some of the genre's top artists over the past two years including Lenny Kravitz, Young Fathers and D'Angelo - and 2018's lineup looks no different; with Soul II Soul mastermind Jazzie B, BBZ and Born N Bread all playing.
