Growing popularity brings success on field
Founded in 1995, the Afghanistan National Cricket Team developed through the influence of the popularity of the sport in neighbouring Pakistan. First growing in refugee camps in Pakistan, cricket spread back into Afghanistan and soon was played by many. The Afghani team has become renowned for their interest in wrist spin and fast bowling. The first game ever played by the national team was against Pakistan in 2001, with a four-match tour inspiring a new generation to take up the sport. In 2006, they completed a tour of England, facing off against county and local teams. The tour was a spectacular success, with the Afghans winning six of their seven matches and gaining confidence that they could compete on the world stage. One Day and T20 have become the most popular formats of cricket in the country, however the Afghanistan National Cricket Team did compete in their inaugural test match in 2018. A proud sporting country who are well placed to continue their development, don't miss the chance to buy or sell Afghanistan National Cricket Team tickets online on StubHub.
Stirring performances at international tournaments
In 2015, the Afghanistan National Cricket Team competed in their first Cricket World Cup, which included a nail-biting victory over Scotland that was only sealed in the last over. With a tremendous innings from Samiullah Shinwari, the Afghans were able to chase down the Scottish score with just three balls remaining. The tournament also saw them play in front of a massive crowd against the highly fancied Australia Cricket team. More than 12,000 people packed in to see the game between the two countries, providing invaluable experience for the Afghani side. Arguably the strongest format for the Afghanistan National Cricket Team is T20, having set a world record score of 278 against Ireland Cricket in 2019. They also enjoyed a fantastic performance at the 2016 T20 World Championship, defeating eventual champions West Indies Cricket in a major upset.
