6LACK: young rapper is one to watch in 2018

Ricardo Valdez Valentine was born on June 24, 1992 in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to Atlanta, Georgia with his parents in 1997. Valentine spent the first five years of his life in Baltimore, before moving with his family to Atlanta. 

Valentine began rapping in middle school as a battle rapper. Valentine was involved in many battles in his youth including against rapper Young Thug. After listening to R&B artists Sade and Usher, he began to teach himself to sing and then started recording music in 2009.

6LACK signed a record deal with an unnamed independent label in July 2011, but left a while later before joining LoveRenaissance and Interscope Records. He went on to release his debut studio album, Free 6LACK, which peaked at number 34 on the US Billboard 200 chart and helped him gain a cult following in his native country. He was also a guest performer on The Weeknd's Legend of the Fall tour in 2017, performing "PRBLMS" during a break in the headliner's set.
